Basic structure of a good ERP solution

Basic structure of a good ERP solution

ERP is the part of the interlinked processes that make up the total business and financial impact. Almost all the typical application systems are nothing but the data manipulation tools. They store data, process them, and present them in the appropriate form whenever requested by the user. In this process the only problem is that there is no link between the application systems being used by different departments.

An ERP system also does the same thing, but in a different manner. There are hundreds of such data tables which store data generated as a result of diverse transactions. These rather integrated for the speedy and accurate results required by multiple users, for multiple purposes, for multiple sites, and at multiple times.

Therefore, ERP solution implies that it be:

Flexible: An ERP system has to have modular application architecture. This means that various functionalities are logically clubbed into different business process and structured into a module which can be interfaced or detached whenever required without affecting the other modules. Comprehensive: It should be able to support variety of organizational functions and must be suitable for a wide range of business organizations.

Web-enabled capability: It should not be confined to the organizational boundaries; rather, it should support the on-line connectivity to the other business entities of the organization.

Best business practice: It must have a collection of the best business processes applicable worldwide.

Why is ERP important to a company?

An organization that has no ERP will be running on many kinds of software that do not allow interaction. Customization also may be difficult it in some cases. This will negatively affect the optimized functioning of organization's business activities.
The organization will be facing hardship in many areas of its functions. The engineering design of the software will be needed in order to improve the product, and to follow the client's behavior and choices since the first contact is quite important. Administration of the different receipts interdependence will be very complex, such as invoices regarding materials purchases, general expenditures or salaries.
All of these things change when an ERP system is implemented. Information flows constantly and allows you to follow a client's processes at any moment, no matter which part of the process they are going through. Purchases and expenditures are registered in a centralized database which allows you to have close control over these activities. In this regard ERP helps you to prevent possible abuse.
A powerfully integrated ERP system enables interactions of marketing, sales, quality control, products processes, supply lines, stocks and many other areas and it can be in a single database. This will eliminate the occasional loss of and retyping errors. It integrates all departments and functions across a company in a single computer system that is able to serve all those different department's particular needs.
An ERP system also automates business processes by placing them into a useful format that is standardized and common for the whole organization. Moreover i

What is the difference between ERP and WMS?

What is the difference between ERP and WMS?
It is important to understand the difference between Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Though many of today's ERP systems have tightly integrated WMS systems, the earlier version ERP systems had a limited participation for WMS. This may be the reason why many companies installed a WMS software separately to manage their warehouse activities.

An advanced system takes into account the data of the product, status, lot, dates, dimensions, location, area, region, owner and inventory details. For this function, WMS determines which would be the best location to store the recently received product. Some of the ERP package is not supported to determine the proper location. The selection of an ERP system with all these functions must be evaluated thoroughly before implementing it.

An effective ERP package gives the possibility to assign tasks automatically to the staff using rules and parameters previously defined. An intelligently integrated WMS module in an ERP system can give directions to the workers in an organized way.

How can an ERP system help you meet Strategic Objectives?

Normally in all organizations, managers have to utilize large part of their time and energy in dealing with crises. This is due to someone from the staff is not having done his job in the manner it was expected to be done.

There may be many cases such as tax payment to the government is not done with accuracy, a shipment to a customer not being made on time, bills not collected, production department not meeting the deadlines etc. We are not saying that these works will be carried by an ERP system once it is implemented. As always, people have to do all of the above, but the advantage of an ERP system is that it will enable them to do all this, in a timely, planned and process driven manner.

An efficient ERP system frees up various levels of management form a very large number of operational problems. The managers will get enough time to look at what is going on, without the information seeking becoming an end in itself.

Also when the CEO of a company wants to know the top strategic objectives for the next year from the Function Head, he can actually get down to defining what those objectives are, and how they will be measured. Again, the defining of the objectives cannot be done by the ERP system, but will help in measuring the parameters associated with the strategic objectives.

Is classroom study key to successful ERP implementation?

Is classroom study key to successful ERP implementation?

The introduction of Information Technology, especially enterprise systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, is a common way of implementing organizational change today. Such enterprise system implementations frequently come with new software systems and business processes that substantially alter workflow and jobs.

While the annual investment of several millions of rupees in ERP systems is staggering, estimates indicate that there could be chances of failures in implemented systems and such failures have been observed even in highly successful organizations. Organizations that successfully implement ERP systems, including new software and business processes, have reported enormous benefits, such as greater efficiency and effectiveness at the individual employee and organizational levels.

One of the primary causes of failure is the inability of managers to effectively manage the change process. Managers frequently fail to consider the organizational environment and culture relying, instead, on success stories of some organizations that used a big-bang strategy, an implementation strategy in which all modules of an ERP system are implemented simultaneously and in a short period time, to manage their own change. The result can be catastrophic for firms, with consequences up to and including going out of business as a result of a failed ERP implementation.

Given this backdrop, it is important to teach diverse aspects of ERP implementations to make today's information systems and business management curricula relevant to organizational practice. Yet, the effective integration of ERP related knowledge into curricula continues to be a challenge with some suggesting that relevant knowledge should be imparted in a wide range of classes. Of the many areas related to ERP systems, the ability of students to understand that different strategies of ERP implementation may be necessary in different scenarios is an important one, especially for those who may go on to manage such implementations.

A "one-medicine-does-not-cure-all-ailments" argument goes well with when it comes to ERP implementation strategies. Yet, mistakes and failures continue. Sorely needed is a teaching approach that can open the eyes of managers, present and future, to the different strategies to ERP success, and when a particular strategy is appropriate. With a good teaching approach with minimum three cases of examples could help the student identify the areas where a failure is bound to happen and may rectify it. It is also a must that each student is assigned to read only one of the three cases, lessening the total workload, but the students understand the differences in approaches and successes of ERP implementations related to all three cases.

Cost-effective, user-friendly, web-based ERP system

MANY of the organizations still depending on their old legacy system are facing hindrance in their progress due to this incompatible system in today's fast growing business environment.

The opportunity to see the benefits of a new system is offset by the distraction of the potential cost and effort. This delay may postpone the incidence of changeover costs, but this is offset by the costs incurred through the missed opportunities associated with the enhanced functionality.

Open lines of communication with partners, suppliers and customers

Open lines of communication with partners, suppliers and customers

BUSINESS in this world is complex, fluid and customer-centric. It requires stringent, yet flexible processes and communications systems that extend globally and respond instantaneously. The process and systems must be integrated. No part of the enterprise can escape the pressure to deliver measurable results.

To compete on a functional level today, businesses must adopt an enterprise-wide approach to ERP that utilizes the Internet and connects to every facet of the value chain. They must change their own internal processes and procedures to foster collaboration efforts both inside and outside the organization, and they must integrate technologies that allow their collaboration efforts to take full flight.

Changing internal process is not always easy. Organizations must abandon old methods that strived to preserve and protect data in individual fiefdoms. They need to allow data to be shared with an organization a rule and roles based system. They must overhaul reporting structures that limit decision-making to a select few. They must open lines of communication and collaboration with the organization and to outside partners, suppliers and customers. Without open processes the extension of EP throughout an enterprise will fail.

eresource ERP gives businesses a vehicle to manage information and use it to their advantage. Its organized customer data in ways that help individual departments operate more efficiently; and it creates streamlined processes that help manufacturing operations cut costs and move products along more quickly.

Web-enabled eresource ERP links departmental communications, work processes, customer data and supplier capabilities into a centrally functioning system - all focused on driving the enterprise forward. Enterprises are already starting to benefit from their eresource ERP installations to more of their organizations. Web-based eresource ERP was a giant step forward when first came into scene. However, over time, most products on the market offer similar functionality, eresouece ERP has its greater efficiencies and effectiveness, which our customers are really satisfied with.

This information enabling creates a new level of cohesion and eliminates most of the departmental and organizational information barriers facilitating smooth and seamless flow information. The integration of ERP, the enabling technologies like CRM, SCM, the analysis and business intelligence tools and web-enabled ERP, the organizations to do business in the Internet way at astonishing speeds and high efficiencies.

ERP reduces cycle time, improves efficiency

ERP reduces cycle time, improves efficiency

AMONG the other benefits that eresource ERP can bring, reduction of cycle time is an important an aspect. Before getting to know the benefits of reduction in cycle time, it is better to understand what cycle time is meant. Cycle time is the time between placement of the order and delivery of the product.

At one end of the manufacturing spectrum is the make-to-order operation where the cycle time and cost of production are high. This is because in a make-to-order situation the manufacturer starts making the product or designing the product only after receiving the order. The manufacturer will procure the materials and components required for production only after getting the order. On the other end of the manufacturing operations is the make-to-stock approach, where the products are manufactured and kept in the finished goods inventory before the order is placed.

In both cases the cycle time can be reduced by the ERP systems, but the reduction will be more in the case of make-to-order systems. In the case of make-to-stock, the items are already manufactured and kept in warehouses or with distributors, for sales. Here the cycle time is reduced not in the shop floor, but during the order fulfillment. In the earlier days, even for the made-to-stock items, the cycle time used to be high. This is because the process was manual and if computerized, was not integrated.

Here is a typical example of old working system. Suppose a customer places an order. The order entry clerk has to check whether the ordered product is available in the warehouse nearest to the customer. If it is not available there, then he will have to check whether it is available in other warehouses or with any of the distributors. Then he will have to process the order, inform the concerned warehouse or distributor to ship the item and then inform the finance department to raise the invoice and so on.

All these used to take time, days and sometimes week. But with eresource ERP system, as soon as the order is entered into the system, the system checks the availability of the items. If it is not available at the warehouse closest to the customer, then the warehouse that is closer and which has the item in stock is identified. The warehouse is informed about the order and the shipment details are sent t the distribution module, which will perform the necessary tasks like packaging, picking and so on, so that the goods are delivered on-time.

The finance module is also alerted about the order so that they can raise the invoice. All these actions are triggered by the click of a button by the order entry clerk. Since all the data, updated to the minute, is available in the centralized database and since all the procedures are automated, almost all these activities are done without human intervention. This efficiency of the eresource ERP system helps in reducing the cycle time.

eresource ERP system has proved that it can produce goods at the flexibility of make-to-order approach without losing the cost and time benefits of made-to-order operations. This means that the customer will get individual attention and features that they want without spending more money or waiting for long periods. With t web enabled eresource ERP system, customers can place the order, track the status of the order and make the payment sitting at home.

ERP for strategic and technical solution

ERP for strategic and technical solution

ORGANIZATIONS need to make a substantial Investment in an ERP system in terms of capital investment, as well as from the recurring annual expenditure. The company, therefore, would like to ensure that the investment in ERP is a right decision. In that process, there may be chances of some questions arising from the members of the decision making team. These questions are reasonable. Why ERP and why not custom built software? And this, followed by which ERP out of the host of ERP packages available in the market.

If the company sees ERP as a technical solution, the main reason for changing over is that its present information systems are too old. Many companies will use systems that were developed in-house and are especially adapted for the company. Most of the companies have several systems developed by different vendors. Agility is the watchword for business

For example, production in a hospital is related to the process of serving meals to the patients, performing surgeries, taking and reading X-rays, conducting physical therapy, cleaning rooms and receiving payments.

Supermarket production operations include ordering and pricing inventory, stocking the shelves, packaging and displaying products, and so on. Government issues permits and licenses, collect taxes, register voters, provide police and fire protection, and so on. Contractors construct, repair and demolish buildings, build highways and bridges, and landscape parks. Similarly banks grant loans, cash or issue cheques and handle deposits and withdrawals.

Production process vary greatly in complexity, production time and the amount of resources, information and planning needed and the number and type of machines and employees needed, and the number of employees and machine needed. The production of a car takes time and requires a variety of very expensive machines and high skilled employees, typing a letter on other hand is a short process using mainly a word processor.

Competition in the future places increased emphasis upon time as expected by speed, quality and global focus. Agility is the watchword. Manufacturers are measured by their ability to react quickly to sudden, when unpredictable change in customer demand for their products and services. To compete successfully in today's business environment, requires an effective ERP system, which is a manufacturing business application, that is time and activity based and above all else, focused on their customer.

Manufacturers must respond quickly and effectively to customer demands. While agility is desirable, without an effective enterprise resource planning system it results in speed without purpose. The very heart of an enterprise manufacturing system centers on its integrated planning, business process and execution capabilities. Traditional closed-loop MRP concepts have long heralded the importance of effective planning system, because process understanding and timely executions.

Strategically effective planning results in improved inventory turns, productivity increase and improved return on investment. Tactically effective business processes provide improved customer satisfaction, reduced time to market and improved market share. Effective execution provides short cycle time, quality assurance, continuous improvement and quick response to process variability. All three elements contribute positively to the decision to install an enterprise-wide resource planning system.

'Real-time' inventory system in eresource ERP is 'real'

When we talk of real-time inventory system, there may be some eyebrows raised and questions asked about the existence of a 'real' real-time inventory system in ERP. But without any hesitation we can assure our customers that eresource ERP is a genuine manufacturing ERP system with a 'real' real-time inventory module.

eresource ERP system has been developed with all the needs of a process manufacturing unit in mind. In a process manufacturing organization receiving raw material "just-in-time' is an important factor. Profit of the product also depends on being able to sell them immediately with certainty as to the cost of what has been produced, based on the cost of materials consumed and the added-value of the manufacturing process.

What is the most important matter concerning an efficient ERP system is managing the cost. Managing costs is a critical requirement of ERP implementations, and delaying cost adjustments disables that needed benefit. Eresource ERP provides its customers with a efficient way of managing the costs through its system.

In today's business environment, Real-Time Inventory has been termed as a very important requirement. However, unlike eresource ERP, all the ERP systems are not capable of doing this work efficiently. For any manufacturer, inventory is placed on-hand both via purchase and via manufacture. The working method for inventory also differs depends on varies manufacturing industries. For example the discrete manufacturer making large runs to stock has ample time to record all costs after the production run completes, and before delivery where as the process manufacturer like Food and Beverage industry is usually making to order for same day delivery.

The real-time inventory can become only real when it includes the updating of costs as well as quantities. Eresource ERP has been doing this for years that continually evolve to meet the most discerning requirements of the modern industry.

eresource's web-based ERP system scores in many ways. In eresource ERP, any Inventory item, or Item type, can have its valuation method set independently. Irrespective of the valuation method set for an item, eresource maintains all the values for all valuation methods for every item. When all valuation methods are maintained for all items, it is possible to change the valuation method for any item if required, and eresource will automatically calculate and post the adjusting journal to the Inventory Control Account in the General Ledger. If the Standard Cost is changed, eresource will post that valuation change also to the General Ledger.

eresource ERP, has the ability to automatically update data between related process and functions. The beauty of eresource ERP system is that information updating happens instantaneously. So you get up-to-the-minute information at your fingertips through our effective web-based ERP system.

The data entered in the eresource ERP system instantly can be viewed by all the users on-line and in real-time. All the members of the organization have access to the same information for planning and control purposes. This can facilitate more consistent planning and control, in contrast to many other ERP systems.
